Applying For Section 8

Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)

Applying for Section 8

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be referred by a service provider
  2. Be a very low-income family, elderly, or disabled
  3. Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  4. Meet other program requirements

If you or someone you know is homeless and not currently working with a service provider, please reach out to your local housing authority for assistance.

How to Apply

To apply for Section 8, you must complete an application form and submit it to your local housing authority. You can find the application form on the housing authority's website or at their office. Once you have submitted your application, you will be placed on a waiting list. The waiting list can be long, so it is important to be patient.

Once you reach the top of the waiting list, you will be contacted by the housing authority to schedule an interview. During the interview, you will be asked about your income, assets, and family size. The housing authority will use this information to determine if you are eligible for the program and to issue you a voucher.

Using Your Voucher

Once you have a voucher, you can use it to rent a home or apartment of your choice. You can use the voucher for any unit that meets the program's requirements. The voucher will pay a portion of your rent, and you will be responsible for paying the remaining amount.

The Section 8 HCV Program can help you and your family find a safe and affordable place to live. If you are eligible for the program, we encourage you to apply.
